Get Your Message Hand Delivered in Washington

Guest blog by V. Peckham

Dear Arizona Huddles and Maricopa County Democrats,

Greetings from Washington, DC’s West End Huddle!  DC residents are in
an unenviable position:  we have no voting representation in Congress
— no senators or congresspeople.  However, due to our location we are
also in a unique position to help our Huddle sisters and brothers in

Every Thursday, we participate in “personal lobbyist” proxy activism
by hand delivering messages to members of Congress on Capitol Hill.
We do this with a group called Lunch Hour Lobbying on Capitol Hill.
We believe this is an effective way to deliver messages from
constituents precisely because we do it in person.  Besides handing
over the petitions/comments/letters, we discuss the main message(s)
and ask questions.  If allowed (each office has it’s own rules), we’ll
also take photos and/or video.

We are offering to do this for you.

Why Arizona?  Two of our members grew up in Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson) and still have family roots there.  Plus, your senators and representatives have not been easy for
you to reach via town halls or telephone!  We’d like to help you with

We propose to partner with you to deliver messages on topics that are
important to you — whether that be an independent investigation into
Russian interference, support for the ACA, continued funding for
Planned Parenthood, continued viability of the EPA, or other topics.

The more pieces of paper and messages we can hand deliver to MOC
offices, the better!  We’d love to start THIS WEEK — again, we do
this every Thursday.  Please let me know if you are interested, and
reach out to as many people as you can (two weeks ago, Lunch Hour
Lobbying delivered a petition with 16,000 signatures to Senator Tillis
of North Carolina!).

You can:

(A) Create a quick survey with a comment section (we’ll read pithy comments out loud to the staff)

(B) Send individual emails

(C) Create one larger email and add your names
Note:   It’s important to include the city where each person lives, to
provide proof of residence/constituency.

Thank you so much in advance.  We believe that this could be very
mutually beneficial:  you get messages hand-delivered and therefore
with greater effect than a phone call or email, and we get to
participate more fully in our democracy.

Contact me any time with questions or suggestions.

V. Peckham, West End Huddle, Washington, D.C.

I’ve created a weekly form for folks to easily send messages that the DC allies will pass along on their lobbying lunches.

    This week’s form is here:
    Please share widely!

We got some excellent feedback last week, which you can read here, in the first comment to my post:

      Hey Kristy!

I am hoping we can turn this information into a blog post of it’s own! Is that okay with you?
